This Week’s Binge 6.19.20

I love movies and I love going to the movies.  I love getting a glass of wine and some popcorn and enjoying whatever is in front of me.  I’m not sure when we’ll be able to go back to the theater again, but one of the unexpected things stemming from Covid-19 is the amount of quality movies that are going straight to streaming.  I’m not mad about that.

Watch

The King of Staten Island

Amazon Prime Video

I didn’t know much about Pete Davidson prior to this movie.  Of course I knew him a little from SNL and from dating Ariana, but I feel like you see a different side of him here.  The movie is, I think you legally say, “inspired” by his life growing up in Staten Island with his sister and mom after his firefighter dad died.

Judd Apatow directed and I tend to really like his work so I’m not surprised I really like this.  I guess I would categorize as a dark comedy because while I did laugh, it also has a surprising depth to it.

Insecure Season 4

HBO Max

Finally…Insecure is back.  Not back in the sense that there are new episodes, back in the sense that it’s back to its amazing self.

Insecure follows Issa as she navigates love, career and friendship in LA.  I felt like I could finally root for Issa again, which I love!  The finale has me shook, total cliff hanger and I can’t wait to see what happens next season.

Queer Eye Season 5

Netflix

It’s amazing to see the difference in the original Queer Eye on Bravo vs the new reboot on Netflix.  Just think, when the original launched in 2003 and it was called Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and it was a little cutting edge.  Thankfully times have changed!

Reboot premise is similar to the original; five gay guys help a stranger in all aspects of their life.  The Fab Five moved to Philly this season and I love when they change up the scene.

This is really truly just a feel good show with a side of happy tears.  Most surprising highlight…doggy fashion show.

Read

It Ends With Us

Colleen Hoover

It Ends With Us is from the author of Verity, but let me say, this is nothing like Verity.  And when I say it’s not like Verity I don’t mean the story or the characters, I would go so far as to say it’s not even the same genre.

Once I got past the fact that it’s a romance novel and not a thriller, it held my interest.  Unfortunately it took me about halfway through until I realized that and so I didn’t enjoy it as much as I could have.  Go in knowing it’s a complex romance and enjoy!
