I’ve bought a lot (I won’t even tell you how many Amazon purchases were made) in 2023 and here are the best of the best! Beauty Elta MD Face SPF 46 I’ve been using this SPF, every single day on my face, for the last five years. It’s the gold standard and is so nourishing I don’t have to use a separate moisturizer. If I feel like I need something extra I’ll seal it with a face oil. Sometimes you need to be careful with buying beauty products on Amazon but I’ve never had an issue with the formula when I’ve bought it here. DMLNN Hair Finishing Gel @whatgracebought suggested this product for her slick back bun and I’ve found I use it almost daily. It’s a game changer for flyaways and new growth. It’s inexpensive and comes with two tubes so I keep one in my travel toiletry bag too! CeraVe Hydrating Face Wash We do not need to spend a lot of money on face wash. I repeat we do not need to spend a lot of money on face wash. As long as it’s not drying, fragrance-free, and gets my face clean I’m good. This has been great with my sensitive skin so I’m at the point where I buy the value size. They also make this in a bar which is what I travel with. Cocofloss Textured Dental Floss Recommended by my dentist and by far the best floss out there. The brand is kind of hard to find, plus this pack gives you a regular size for home and two small sizes that are perfect for travel. Books Rebecca Yarros Fourth Wing Was this the best book I read all year? Probably not. Was it my favorite? My obsession says yes. Check out the below list for the most entertaining movies to watch on Amazon (because sometimes entertainment is all you want). 5. Coming 2 America A sequel to the hysterical 1988 film Coming to America, Eddie Murphy reprises his role as Prince Akeem in Coming 2 America. While a lot of the original castmates are also in the film, the addition of a few newcomers (Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan) adds freshness. In 1988 Prince Akeem made his way from Africa to the U.S. (Queens, NY of course) to find a wife. Two decades later we find him bringing long-lost American family members back home to Africa. While not quite as funny as Coming to America, there’s something to be said for nostalgia. 4. The Map of Tiny Perfect Things Call it what you will…YA…young love…coming-of-age story. The Map of Tiny Perfect Things is a spin on the typical never-ending/Groundhog Day plot, but with more emotion. Two teenage strangers are both experiencing the same exact day and they manage to find each other. Together they work to figure out what can be done about the loop they are in, or if anything should be done at all. 3. Late Night Think The Devil Wears Prada meets The Morning Show, rom-com style. Mindy Kaling suddenly becomes a comedy writer for a late-night talk show hosted by a woman who has been on the job too long. In a male-dominated industry, we are given a glimpse into what fee they have to do to succeed and how a non-jaded newcomer can change things up. Very cute! 2. The Big Sick Co-written by and starring Kumail Nanjiani of Silicon Valley fame, The Big Sick is based on his real-life dating experience during his early years trying to make it as a comedian. Lucky for us, Kumail writes a beautiful story to tell his tale.

Knowing what I know of Jillian Bell, I fully expected this movie to be a lot of physical comedy and somewhat over the top. I am happily surprised it is not.

Brittany is in her late 20’s, lives in NYC, is out of shape, drinking too much and her career has stalled. Who hasn’t been there? She decides to make a change, hence the marathon (the marathon of all marathons, NYC). This film strikes the perfect balance between being entertaining and inspiring. Do you ever feel like a cheesy, sappy movie? Well here’s a cheesy YA take of a repeating day (think Palm Springs or Russian Doll).

I don’t usually go for YA (unless you count Twilight, Hunger Games, Harry Potter…ok fine it’s a guilty pleasure) but Becca and Grace from Bad On Paper Podcast both really enjoyed it so I gave it a shot.

While I didn’t have quite the emotional reaction they did, be warned, it could cause a tear or two.

I am: Entertained

Out of nowhere, well at least it wasn’t honored at the Golden Globes, came Sound of Metal with quite a few Oscar nominations. So of course I watched, in the name of my craft.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Clocking in just at two hours, I never felt like it ran long and watched the whole thing intently.

I assumed, based on the title and the images, that the film would incorporate a lot of heavy metal, of which I am not a fan. In fact it did not. Although the plot is based on a heavy metal musician losing his hearing, the story is about the journey he takes as he loses his hearing.

I can see why the Academy of Fine Arts & Sciences recognized the movie and the lead and supporting actors as best in they categories. Don’t let the heavy metal scare you, this is one of the best movies of the year.

I am: Entertained

33 years after Coming to America, the initial cast reunited for the sequel, Coming 2 America.

The original Coming to America has Eddie Murphy playing an African prince who decides to come to America (Queens, in fact) to find his bride. He’s accompanied by his sidekick, played by Arsenio Hall, and hilarity ensues. I’ve seen the original countless times, it’s worth the watch if you haven’t seen it.

The sequel picks up 33 years after when he is a happily married prince in Africa but finds out he left an illegitimate son he didn’t know about back in Queens. You get the drift. He goes back 2 America. But honestly, most of the movie takes place in Africa. Leslie Jones and Tracy Morgan are great additions to the cast, and I was thoroughly entertained.

There are some inside jokes and a lot of throwbacks to the original movie but I don’t think you need to have seen the original to be entertained…but it definitely helps. Nostalgia works in crazy ways.
