This Week’s Binge 2.12.21

Firefly Lane

Netflix

I had all the intentions on reading the bestselling book Firefly Lane is based on before watching the show, but alas…I’ve been stuck on a non-fiction book for weeks now.

This is the story of 2 best friends who, at face value, couldn’t be more different. They have a lifelong friendship and it’s told from the view of 3 distinct timeframes of their lives, their teens, 20s, and 40’s (the 1970s, 1980s, early 2000s). I am a sucker for a good flashback story (Lost, The Wilds) and this story goes to the three different areas of their lives in each episode. I had a feeling it was going to be a soapy drama (Virgin River) but I was actually surprised by some deep topics and cliffhangers at the end of most episodes.

Seeing that a good portion of this happens in the 80s, be prepared for some awesome music and good throwback fashion. I’m v excited for season 2, although it hasn’t officially been announced yet.

Schitt’s Creek

Netflix

After claiming I just didn’t get it during the Emmy post, I committed to you (and myself) I would give Schitt’s Creek another try before the Golden Globes…and I did.

Not only did I give it another shot, I watched all 6 seasons. I wouldn’t say I binged, because I wasn’t watching episode after episode in one night, but I most definitely watched an episode a day.

When I first tried watching the series 2 years ago the series just seemed so contrived. Rich family loses all their money and learns how real people live, not very original. But that as a plot is just scratching the surface of their journey. In the end, I found the entire Rose family, and their fellow Schitt’s Creekians, endearing.

Was every episode a cliffhanger? No. Was the writing witty and clever? Not especially. Did I look forward to not having to think about anything, spending time with the Rose’s, and laughing every single night? Abso-freaking-lutely.

The New York Times Presents: Framing Britney Spears

Hulu

Ok so I’m calling this a movie because it’s a one-part documentary, but really The New York Times Presents is a 10 part series with a spotlight on a different topic each episode. Full disclosure, I haven’t watched any of the other episodes. But after noticing Britney on IG and all the #FreeBritney happening on social media I know I needed to watch.

Ugh, we, as a society, are gross. What we did, by being overly concerned with her life, her breakup with JT, her breakdown, just perpetuated the media paying money for the paparazzi shots, and then why would they leave her alone? The way Britney was basically hunted like an animal, and now, under the court ordered conservatorship, is living in a 60 million dollar prison. It doesn’t feel right.

I don’t want to comment on metal health, but what is happening is sad. What happened is sad. They way we treated her is sad.

The adults who are controlling her finances are benefiting financially and that seems like a clear conflict of interest. Britney Spears is beyond talented and beyond rich, but I can’t help but feel that the system has failed her.
