2020 Emmy Award Predictions

The 2020 Primetime Emmy Nominations have been announced, and you know what that means.  It’s officially awards season!!!

I’m excited to see that the Emmy Awards will still be held this year on September 20th, 2020.  It’s going to be virtual and word on the street is it’s a come as you are, so I’m really looking forward to what everyone will bring from home.  I’m sure there will be some amusing things to see, it’s a talented bunch.

As I was writing the post I had some thoughts:

  • Happy to see that the nomination list is more inclusive than years past.  In fact all of my picks happen to have a female lead…just happened that way this year.
  • There isn’t a clear winner amongst networks, which I’m not surprised about because there is a ton of great series out there.
  • I was going to do my picks for lead actor/actress in a comedy and drama series and then it dawned on me that I’ve seen all the nominations in the drama category, not so much in the comedy.  Maybe I need to get a little more laughter into my life.  Or maybe I just have a different sense of humor than the Television Academy.
  • Most overrated nominated series is Schitt’s Creek.  I watched two episodes.  I don’t get it.
  • Most under-watched nominated series is Watchmen.  I didn’t know anyone else who was watching live but I couldn’t not watch it.  Obsessed.
  • The Kominsky method keeps getting nominated, and I’m not sure why I haven’t watched.  I love the casting and the trailer looks great.  I have committed myself to at least watch one episode before the awards show.

Without further ado, below are my picks for the top series:

Outstanding Comedy Series

Nominations

  • Curb Your Enthusiasm • HBO • HBO Entertainment
  • Dead To Me • Netflix • CBS Television Studios
  • The Good Place • NBC • Universal Television in association with Fremulon and 3 Arts Entertainment
  • Insecure • HBO • HBO Entertainment in association with Issa Rae Productions, Penny for Your Thoughts Entertainment and 3 Arts Entertainment
  • The Kominsky Method • Netflix • A Warner Bros. Television Production
  • The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel • Prime Video • Amazon Studios
  • Schitt’s Creek • Pop TV • Not A Real Company Productions, Inc.
  • What We Do In The Shadows • FX Networks • FX Productions

Prediction: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

This is a very competitive category, and I really think it’s going to go to either Insecure or The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.  Both are past their sophomore season, better than ever, and tackling difficult issues through a comedic POV.  I’m going with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on this one.  I loved the entire season from beginning to end whereas with Insecure I could have done with a little less of Molly’s boyfriend drama.  Molly…suck it up and go to dinner.

Outstanding Drama Series

Nominations

  • Better Call Saul • AMC • High Bridge, Crystal Diner, Gran Via Productions and Sony Pictures Television
  • The Crown • Netflix • Left Bank Pictures in association with Sony Pictures Television
  • The Handmaid’s Tale • Hulu • MGM, Daniel Wilson Productions, The Littlefield Company, White Oak Pictures
  • Killing Eve • BBC America • Sid Gentle Films Ltd.
  • The Mandalorian • Disney+ • Lucasfilm Ltd.
  • Ozark • Netflix • Media Rights Capital
  • Stranger Things • Netflix • Netflix
  • Succession • HBO • HBO Entertainment in association with Project Zeus, Hyperobject Industries and Gary Sanchez Productions

Prediction: The Crown

It’s tricky when a season airs right after the cut-off date because that means that we have to try to remember all the details of the season, how we felt, what we saw from a year ago.  I have a hard time remembering what I ate two nights ago, so take that into consideration.  My pick is The Crown.  Aside from the great acting, writing, and casting, they have done an exceptional job at highlighting important events in history from the Crown’s perspective.  Aberfan left me in tears and with mouth agape.

Outstanding Limited Series

Nominations

  • Little Fires Everywhere • Hulu • ABC Signature Studios / Hello Sunshine
  • Mrs. America • FX Networks • FX Productions
  • Unbelievable • Netflix • CBS Television Studios
  • Unorthodox • Netflix • Studio Airlift and RealFilm
  • Watchmen • HBO • HBO Entertainment in association with White Rabbit, Paramount Television, Warner Bros. Television & DC Comics

Prediction: Watchmen

To be fair I haven’t seen all of the nominated series, but I’m going with Watchmen.  It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen, every episode was like an acid trip gone wrong (what I assume an acid trip gone wrong is like).  I had no idea what was going on the entire time but that didn’t stop me from being enthralled.

So there you have it, my picks for the 2020 Emmys.  Since I haven’t seen all the nominations for leads in a comedy series, what should I binge first?
