This Week’s Binge 7.3.20
I binged things on complete opposite sides of the spectrum. It’s not often I’m annoyed with something I binge, but when it happens then you know it’s pretty bad. Yikes.

This has to be one of the most beautifully acted, written and shot coming of age stories I’ve ever watched. Initially I was like Oh great, another story of popular boy falling for awkward girl. Do not be deterred, it is SO much deeper than that.
The complex relationships that are highlighted based on miscommunication, wanting to blend in, trying to protect yourself…I mean, it’s so real. Normal People is one of those few pieces of entertainment that really make you reflect on your own life, and maybe wish that you knew now what you knew then so you could know better and do better. Of course none of use knew then what we know now, and I guess that’s why this series is appropriately named Normal People.
Now for the not so great part, appears that this is a one time, limited series so maybe try your best to not binge it all in one weekend, but good luck with that! I didn’t read the book so not sure how closely the story aligns, but I do remember Bad On Paper Podcast mentioning that this was somehow better than the book.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga

I really didn’t know what Eurovision was when I watched this. While I had heard of it I thought it was something similar to American Idol, where people compete all over Europe in a singing competition. Now I understand it’s something a little more similar to like a singing Olympics where countries from all over Europe send their best to compete with each other and one person, representing their country, wins. And many times the are are a little untraditional.
Now that we know what Eurovision is, the movie is about an act trying to get there and their relationship with each other. Had so much potential with the premise and with Will Ferrel and Rachel McAdams starring. While Rachel McAdams acting is good in the movie, even she can’t overcompensate for the horrific writing. I love a good slapstick as much as anyone else, but this was not it for me.
For a newer slapstick comedy that is actually funny, do yourself a favor and watch The Wrong Missy.
