The 5 Best Netflix Originals Comedy Series

Netflix is known for its original content and their Original Comedies are no exception. Sometimes it seems like they are releasing content faster than you can watch so it may be a bit overwhelming.  It can be hard to know which shows are worth your time, but the below most definitely are.

Comedies have really evolved over the years, and it feels like the Netflix sense of humor is a little more gritty, a little less in your face.  I, for one, am obsessed with the dramedy version of comedy.

Get ready to binge on the top 5 Netflix Originals Comedy series.

5.  Easy

Easy Netflix Comedy Series

Easy flew under the radar and is underrated.  I hadn’t even heard of the show until two years after it aired, but when I started watching I was hooked.

The way that NYC is the 5th character in Sex and the City, Chicago is a character in Easy.  That alone gives it a little boost, I love when a city is integral to a storyline.

The series takes a realistic look at people navigating relationships, which that in and of itself is complex.  It’s unique in that each episode focuses on a different relationship and they don’t really intersect, but you do come back to them later in the series.

It’s probably more of a dramedy than a pure comedy, but it deserves to be some list.

4. The Politician

The Politician Netflix Comedy Series

I wrote a review of season 2 but that fact that it’s on this list…spoiler…Obsessed!  Dare I even say season 2 is better than season 1.

Still new to the scene and in production, I’m hoping Ryan Murphy can continue going strong with the satirical look at what an aspiring politician will do to get elected.

The change-up in the cast and in what city it takes place helps keep things fresh season over season.  Looking forward to seeing what season 3 will bring.

3. Orange Is the New Black

Orange is the New Black Netflix Comedy Series

With 7 seasons you will have a lot to binge with this series.  It first streamed back in 2013 and was part of the Netflix business revolution, when they started investing in their own content creation.

Orange Is the New Black had new in its title and that’s exactly what it was.  It was fresh and new.  It’s a little less so now 7 years later, but that doesn’t take away from the great writing and cast.  Inspired by a true story of an average woman with an average upbringing committing a crime and going to a women’s prison, this series sheds a light on how easy it can be to get caught up in the prison system, and somehow makes it relatable.

Easily a dramedy, Orange Is the New Black is a reminder that more times than not, the world is not black and white.

2. Dead to Me

Dead to Me Netflix Series

Another season 2 review and once again Obsessed!

Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini make for unlikely friends but somehow they play perfectly off each other.  Comedy mixed with mystery, suspense all wrapped in frenemyship (I know that’s not a word).  Dead to Me is one of those rare plots I haven’t seen a gazillion times before only re-invented.

Unfortunately, they just announced that season 3 will be the last season.  Although I hate to see a good show go too early, sometimes it’s best to leave them (that’s me!) wanting more.

1. Russian Doll

Russian Doll Netflix Comedy Series

This is probably a controversial #1 pick seeing as though it’s only had one season, and pretty much anything can be great once.  The true test if something is amazing if it continues to be great.  Season 2 was supposed to come out Summer of 2020, but unfortunately got pushed out until 2021.

Russian Doll has re-invented a plot that we’ve seen numerous times (Palm Springs, Groundhog Day) but replaying the same day over and over again until you can figure out why…there’s something about it that’s really compelling.

Natasha Lyonne (who is also in Orange Is the New Black) stars as the main character who is re-living her 36th birthday.  Is she a model citizen?  No…but she’s more complex than she initially seems.

Even though this show got nominated for an Emmy because it’s amazing, it didn’t get a ton of buzz.  Do yourself a favor and binge.
