The Idea of You Review
The Idea of You
Robinne Lee
I’m not sure if I made this up, or this is speculation, or if this is real…but I think the gist of the book is One Direction fan fiction, cougar edition. JK. But also, kind of not. At least that’s what I thought going into reading the book so I was prepared for it to be like 50 Shades of Grey (aka Twilight fan fiction).
Yes, there is a lot of sex in this but not nearly as much, nor gratuitous, as 50 Shades. Amongst all the sex, there is an interesting story intertwined about finding yourself, setting and breaking boundaries all while breaking the stereotypes against ageism and sexism.
This is Robinne Lee’s first book and I really like her style of writing. She’s very detailed of her descriptions of where the characters are…looking at the stars while eating at Nobu in Malibu, or at Balthazar in Manhattan having breakfast. In that way, you can really envision the story play out, and for someone stuck at home during COVID all the jet setting was a nice distraction.
I read this book for a book club pick and wasn’t so sure about the premise. Is it the most realistic? No. But it did get me to thinking. I was thinking about Demi and Ashton and their story…sure it didn’t last forever but it was real (her autobiography is very good!). It had me googling what current 40-year-old women and 20-year-old men celebrities look like; it had me googling celebrities who were in relationships with non-celebrities.
I guess what I’m saying is the book had me thinking…and isn’t that what we really want when we are looking for entertainment?
