‘The Umbrella Academy’ Review
The Umbrella Academy
Netflix
Let me just start by saying I had absolutely no interest in ‘The Umbrella Academy’. Not when it debuted in 2019 and not when the second season hit in July 2020. But can you really say anything other than OBSESSED when you binge 2 full seasons in a week???
My initial indifference was driven by the very generic understanding that it was superhero/sci-fi/fantasy/something I’m sure I’m not interested in. And basically like all really cool superhero (re: Marvel) movies, I was dead wrong.
‘The Umbrella Academy’ is a series, based on a comic book, about 7 siblings with special powers who grew apart. When they disgruntledly reunite as adults, the fun starts.
Full transparency, the first couple of episodes were OK, a little slow, but then just wait. You realize there are layers to the plot, the character development is strong, and there’s more than meets the eye.
Oh, and remember that comic book? Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance wrote it. He’s an Executive Producer on the series so trust that the music is SO GOOD.
I am: Obsessed
