This Week’s Binge 12.4.20

The Undoing‘ finale was this week and IT. DID. NOT. DISAPPOINT.  If you haven’t watched it yet, do.  Speaking of crime dramas, Law & Order: SVU is back.  Isn’t it crazy that it’s been running for 22 seasons???

The Umbrella Academy

Netflix

Let me just start by saying I had absolutely no interest in ‘The Umbrella Academy’.  Not when it debuted in 2019 and not when the second season hit in July 2020.  But can you really say anything other than OBSESSED when you binge 2 full seasons in a week???

My initial indifference was driven by the very generic understanding that it was superhero/sci-fi/fantasy/something I’m sure I’m not interested in.  And basically like all really cool superhero (re: Marvel) movies, I was dead wrong.

‘The Umbrella Academy’ is a series, based on a comic book, about 7 siblings with special powers who grew apart.  When they disgruntledly reunite as adults, the fun starts.

Full transparency, the first couple episodes were OK, a little slow, but then just wait.  You realize there are layers to the plot, the character development is strong, and there’s more than meets the eye.

Oh, and remember that comic book?  Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance wrote it.  He’s an Executive Producer on the series so trust that the music is SO GOOD.

Atypical

Netflix

When I heard that ‘Atypical’ was a scripted comedy about a kid on the autism spectrum starting to date, I wasn’t compelled to watch it.  I knew it was supposed to be funny and I had heard some good things, but it just didn’t speak to me.

After watching ‘Love on the Spectrum‘ and thoroughly enjoying the bright light that show is, I decided to give the scripted version a shot.

To be clear, ‘Atypical’ is not a comedy about a boy on the spectrum, it’s a comedy about family dynamics and interactions and one member of the family just so happens to be on the spectrum.  It’s insightful and funny, and what I imagine to be a somewhat realistic depiction of a lot of families (with a little Hollywood dazzle).
