This Week’s Binge 4.30.21

I finished watching all of the films nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award just in time for the awards ceremony. I wasn’t shocked by any of the winners but was surprised at how they ran the show. No movie clips? And when we are really missing the movies? Trivia with celebrities? No thank you. It felt like a glorified celebrity fundraiser. Big miss on this one.

Tell Me Your Secrets

Amazon Prime Video

I’m down for a good psychological thriller, it’s one of my favorite genre’s (insert macabre laughter here).

Lily Rabe plays a woman charged in a murder case but then gets released to the witness protection program. But not everything as is seems.

There are few episodes that drug a little bit and were predictable, but then there were other times I was highly engaged. Overall, very entertaining.

I initially thought this was a limited series but they leave the door open for a season 2, and upon further research, sounds like it’s already in the works.

Minari

Amazon Prime Video

Oscar-nominated Minari is the story of a Korean immigrant couple raising their family in the United States in the 1980s.

Although mostly subtitled, it doesn’t detract from the film. I can see why this was nominated for best film, because stories about everyday American life are fascinating.

At a little over 2 hours, the entire flow of the movie is a slower pace, and by the end, I was ready for it to conclude. All in all, it’s a good retrospective on life, America, and what it’s like to immigrate.

The Father

Amazon Prime Video

Although I wanted Chadwick Boseman to win the Best Lead Oscar for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, when I finished watching The Father, I wrote in my notes, I won’t be surprised if Anthony Hopkins wins. So no, I didn’t think it was the big upset that a lot of people did.

Anthony Hopkins portrayal of a man with struggling with what happens to the mind as it ages is heartbreaking. It’s a unique perspective and it’s told in a fresh way. It’s a movie that you can’t watch in a background, you need to pay attention to all the details, but it’s worth it.
