This Week’s Binge 6.26.20

I binged a show, watched a movie, started 2 new series, and finished a book.  Not too bad for a week’s worth of entertainment.

Watch

The Politician Season 2

Netflix

The Politician centers around an overly ambitious…um, politician.  His life revolves around getting to office and the shows is based on what he does to get there, dark comedy ensues!

I love the satirical humor of The Politician and the refreshed cast is a nice shake up.  I’m a huge fan of Ryan Murphy and you can see his unique style throughout.

I’m ready for Season 3!

Legendary

HBO Max

The category is: Obsessed.

If you love Pose, this show is for you.  It’s a reality competition that highlights Ballroom and the people in it.  Ballroom in the sense of Drag Ball culture, not “Dancing with the Star”.

I started watching this new series last week and binged until I was current on episodes since the season is still ongoing.

Note that this is a Max Original so don’t be disappointed to go to your HBO Now app and not find it on there (like I did).

Perry Mason

HBO Max

Expected to like this more than I did.  I love crime shows and Matthew Rhys but this has started slow.  It’s only one episode in (they air weekly) so I’ll stick to see if it picks up.

Perry Mason is a private detective paid to crack a case.  First impressions:

  • Perry Mason seems like he is a bit rough around the edges and potentially on the verge of a drinking issue
  • The mystery appears complex, so hoping for some twists & turns
  • First episode introduced a lot of characters and the cast is solid

As with most pilot episodes I’m not hooked but it’s got potential.  Time will tell.

Jumanji: The Next Level

Amazon Prime Video

Jumanji is better than it has any right to be.  The Next Level came out a year ago and I just came around to watching it because in my head I didn’t think it would be good.  I don’t know why I thought that since I enjoyed Welcome to the Jungle.

When 4 friends get transported inside a video game, but their avatar is nothing like they are in real life, it’s comedic relief.

It’s perfect when you want something mindless and light-hearted to laugh at.  In general I love impressions, and the hysterical voice work and impressions that these famous actors do is worth the watch.

Read

The Tattooist of Auschwitz

Heather Morris

Set in WWII this is a true story of a Jewish man imprisoned in Auschwitz and what he has to do to survive the Holocaust.

I’m fascinated by the stories of people who have survived the unimaginable and are able to tell their story so that society can learn from history and be inspired by their resilience.

When I first picked up this book I thought it was a historical fiction but about halfway through I realized it was based on real people.  There are no words to describe their journey, but the author does an incredible job of honoring the story.
