This Week’s Binge 9.11.20

A long holiday, partially rainy, weekend was perfect for binging some things I’ve been meaning to watch.

Watch | Series

Unorthodox

Netflix

This limited series is based on a memoir and gives a rare look inside the Hasidic Jewish community in Williamsburg and a young women’s journey on trying to leave.

The story is captivating and with only 4 episodes it left me wanting more.  Note that a lot of the dialogue is in Yiddish so there are quite a few subtitles, which doesn’t bother me but definitely a series you’ll need to pay close attention to.

The Boys | Season 2

Amazon Prime

The boys are back!!!  I forgot how unique and insane this series is.  In an alternate world where superhero’s are part of the everyday world, it’s a fresh premise.  Don’t be fooled by the title, women are as integral as men in The Boys.

Season 1 released all episodes at once but season 2 released 3 episodes and is now on a weekly schedule.  While I don’t love that, I but can understand them wanting to stretch out content during Covid-19.

Away

Netflix

What may be happening in real life sooner than we imagined, Away is about the first mission to Mars.  But it’s not just a story about space, it’s also a story about all of the astronauts (are they still called astronauts if they are from other countries?) and the families they leave behind on earth.

To be honest, I’m not generally a Hilary Swank fan but she does justice to the character.  Josh Charles does not disappoint.

Bill & Ted Face the Music

Apple TV

We first met Bill & Ted in 1989 on their time traveling Excellent Adventure.  I was very skeptical of how the role reprisal would be 31 years later.  I’m happy to say I was pleasantly surprised.

Not only does the time traveling story make sense (which is no easy feat, quantum physics has never been my strong suit), the characters are somehow exactly as they were in the 80’s.  The story feels like a natural progression.  31 years later Bill & Ted have kids and they are a good addition to keeping the franchise fresh.  If you liked the original you’ll be entertained

Class Action Park

HBO Max

Class Action Park is basically a case study of the lawless 80’s.  It’s a documentary about an extremely dangerous amusement park, not even sure if there were rules and regulations at the time.  If they existed, they were being broken, people were being injured constantly and even dying.  Insane.

Not only does the documentary go into how the park came to be and the craziness of it, but also all the rides.  I thought it was a little long but overall pretty interesting.

The Guest List

Lucy Foley

I thought I was going to really enjoy this book.  A Reese’s Book Club pick AND a thriller, I had high hopes.  Set in Ireland, there is mystery surrounding the guests and the events of a wedding.

I kept putting the book down, too many blatant cliffhangers that go nowhere.  Everything is just a little too convenient.

I am: Annoyed
