Top 5 90’s Comedies on HBO
There is something about a 90’s comedy that just feels right. You know back in the day when you would watch cable and be flipping through channels and find yourself stopping at a movie you had seen countless times but love so much you could pick up watching wherever it was in the film? Well a lot of us don’t have cable anymore but that doesn’t mean we should be depriving ourselves of those 90’s, mostly rom-coms, that we loved from back in the day.
While HBO is known these days for their award winning series, they started off as Home Box Office and it’s the perfect place to get your fix. The below are my picks for the top 5 90’s Comedies to watch on HBO (at time of posting).
5. What About Bob?
I love Bill Murray’s dry sense of humor. His delivery is unmatched and playing a character with OCD you can see how he could drive anyone mad. Fun fact – this movie is how I learned what agoraphobia is…funny the things you remember.
4. Mrs. Doubtfire
Robin Williams leads this quintessential 90’s cast with an unforgettable performance, RIP. It’s not really an original premise at this point in time, “man finds reason to dress up like a woman and surprisingly nobody can tell it’s him”! I guess there’s a reason that the story is retold in different iterations time after time…it’s funny!
3. One Fine Day
Classic “boy meets girl, boy doesn’t like girl, boy falls for girl”. Two divorced parents find each other in the middle of a chaotic workday juggling their respective children, romance ensues. You don’t really think of divorce as a hysterical story line, but so far it’s in 2 of my top 5 90’s comedies…who would’ve thought?
2. Picture Perfect
I don’t really think this film got its proper due, not sure why it flew under the radar. I had the VHS (that’s right) which was how I was able to watch it so much, trust it was on repeat. A budding ad exec takes on a faux relationship to prove how committed she is…to her job. Jennifer Aniston plays a perfect Jennifer Aniston and it’s a dream of a 90’s wardrobe.
1. Notting Hill
An American actress and an english bloke…no this is not the story of Meghan and Harry but it’s just as compelling. A top movie always has notable lines, and “I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy…” is an all time great.
Now that I’m reflecting back, apparently my top 90’s comedies mostly involve a strong woman and how she navigates life while figuring out her career. Maybe it was a sign of the times, but I kind of like that. If you’re looking to start on a new show check out my 5 Best Drama Series to watch on HBO.
