Aperol Spritz Mocktail Recipe

This is my sixth year in a row doing Dry January and I’ve learned sometimes you need something a little more exciting than sparkling water. Mocktails are perfect during Dry January, or anytime you want to refrain from drinking, when you aren’t imbibing but still want to have a fun beverage. An Aperol Spritz is one of my go-to cocktails so I knew I needed to make a non-alcoholic version. Aperol is the brand name of an Italian aperitivo, meant to be enjoyed before the meal, so there can’t technically be an Aperol Spritz Mocktail since Aperol contains includes alcohol. Please think of this as an Aperol Spritz-inspired mocktail and enjoy!

Virgin Aperol Spritz ingredients

For Dry January, not only is the intention to make an Alcohol Free Aperol Spritz, but it is to keep it relatively clean with ingredients you can easily find at the grocery store. The white grape juice replaces the prosecco (both are made with grapes, no?), and adding orange juice gives a more complex flavor and helps with the color. I’ve also opted to use freshly squeezed (by me) for all juices except the white grape juice (how does one juice a grape?)

Non-Alcoholic Spirits

In this Aperol Spritz Mocktail recipe, I’ve chosen to use fruit juices as the alcohol substitute, but the other option is to use a non-alcoholic spirit. With the emergence of the sober curious movement, many zero-proof companies have popped up. I haven’t personally tried any, but if you are interested this spritz is from a well-known brand and has great reviews.

What bar tools do you need to make a Non Alcoholic Aperol Spritz?

  • Fine Mesh Strainer | To easily capture the juice from the grapefruit I place the medium size in this set on top of the measuring cup below.
  • Measuring Cup | The two cup option fits perfectly with the medium size strainer from above.
  • Wine Glasses | Regardless if I’m drinking red, white, or a spritz, I love these large wine glasses. It’s a classic style, and the quality is great!

Aperol Spritz Mocktail Recipe

Servings: 1

Ingredients

  • 5 oz grapefruit juice (I freshly squeeze from a grapefruit)
  • 1 oz orange juice (I freshly squeeze from an orange)
  • 1 oz white grape juice (no sugar added)
  • Sparkling water to top (amount will depend on the size of the glass and how much ice is used)
  • Orange as garnish

Directions

  1. Place ice cubes in a wine glass
  2. Pour first three ingredients
  3. Stir
  4. Top with sparkling water
  5. Garnish with an orange slice

 Tips

  • If you add a sprig of thyme to the drink it will impart a slight herb flavor and that will be more similar to a Campari Spritz Mocktail
