Pumpkin Spice Margarita Recipe
Call me basic but I’m a fan of pumpkin spice anything! Come the first day of Fall, September 22nd in the US, I love pumpkin spice coffee, pumpkin spice tea, and pumpkin spice coffee creamer (insert Bubba Gump voice here) to name just a few things. So it’s a no-brainer that I would like to also enjoy a pumpkin spice cocktail. Last year I posted the (strong) pumpkin spice martini recipe, but for something a little more refreshing please try this pumpkin spice margarita. Enjoy!

What is a Margarita?
A margarita is a classic cocktail made with tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice. Some variations include blending with ice and serving frozen, adding fruit, or rimming with salt. While any full-service bar should be able to make a margarita, you’ll often find a wide selection offered at Mexican restaurants. I imagine this pumpkin spice margarita would pair perfectly with a cozy, rich mole sauce.
Ingredients Needed to Make a Pumpkin Spice Margarita
- Tequila – Since you’ll be mixing and not sipping, you won’t need super expensive Tequila. Since Blanco is unaged and light, this is the type of Tequila I prefer, but you can use whatever you like, or have on hand. Some brands that I have on hand for margarita-making are Casamigos and Espolon.
- Triple Sec – Orange liqueur is a key component, and Cointreau is my favorite.
- Orange – Traditional margaritas are made with lime juice, but this Fall version replaces the acid with freshly squeezed orange juice.
- Pumpkin Puree – Make sure you buy pure pumpkin puree and not pumpkin pie filling.
What do You Need to Make a Pumpkin Spice Margarita?
- Cocktail Shaker | This shaker is simple, has a built-in shaker, and doesn’t leak.
- Fine Mesh Strainer | You’ll need a mesh strainer to make the blackberry simple syrup to remove the seeds.
- Glass Bottle | This recipe makes a cup of simple syrup so if you don’t use it all you’ll want to store it in the fridge.
- Large Ice Cube Mold | The larger the ice cube the longer it will take to melt and water down the drink.
- Jigger | Part of any well-equipped bar.
Pumpkin Spice Margarita Recipe
Servings: 1
Ingredients
PUMPKIN SPICE SIMPLE SYRUP:
- 1 cup organic pumpkin puree (make sure not to get pumpkin pie filling)
- 1 cup organic granulated cane sugar
- ½ tsp organic vanilla extract
- ½ tsp organic ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp organic ground cloves
- ½ tsp organic ground ginger
- ½ tsp organic ground nutmeg
- ¼ tsp organic ground cloves
PUMPKIN SPICE MARGARITA:
- 1½ oz Tequila Blanco
- 1 oz triple sec
- 1 oz freshly squeezed orange juice
- 1 oz pumpkin spice simple syrup
- Cinnamon stick and orange slice for garnish (optional)
CINNAMON SUGAR RIM:
- 2 tbsp organic granulated cane sugar
- 1 tsp organic ground cinnamon
Directions
- Add 1 cup of water and all the pumpkin spice syrup ingredients to a saucepan and bring to a boil
- Once the sugar has dissolved and the pumpkin puree has thinned out, turn off the heat and let the syrup cool to room temperature (about 30 minutes)
- Place a fine-mesh sieve over a bowl (I like to use this measuring cup since it has a spout) and strain the syrup
- Mix the cinnamon sugar rim ingredients together on a plate
- On a separate plate add some simple syrup
- Dip the rim of the glass in simple syrup and then the cinnamon sugar mixture (I prefer to rim only a portion of the glass, but feel free to do the whole thing)
- Add ice to a cocktail shaker along with the pumpkin spice margarita ingredients
- Shake vigorously until a light foam layer appear, around 12 seconds
- Pour the margarita into the rimmed glass, straining the ice
- Garnish with a cinnamon stick and a slice of orange
