This Week’s Binge 3.5.21

The Golden Globes award show was on Sunday and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler did a great job hosting. If you didn’t know, you may not have even realized they were on different stages across the country. Overall, the show was a little boring, but with not much else going on it was a nice change of pace.

Surviving Death

Netflix

Continuing my woo-woo curious journey (if you haven’t yet, check out this Journey of the Souls review), I binged the new Netflix docu-series ‘Surviving Death’.

With 6 episodes focusing on different end of life and paranormal phenomenon, it didn’t take long to get through. I will say, as a natural skeptic, I straight up don’t believe some people (one particular medium definitely seemed like a con) but others seemed believable, like the doctor who had a near-death experience.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Netflix

This was a last-minute binge trying to watch as many Golden Globe-nominated things as I could before the award ceremony. Even though I hadn’t watched it, I did predict that Chadwick Boseman would win for Best Actor. And I was correct, so I’m glad I got a chance to see the performance.

The acting was excellent as was the casting but it is a heavy, heavy movie. Inspired by the real Ma Rainey, a successful Black blues singer in the 1920s, this movie takes place in Chicago. Although Ma is the heart of the film, most of the time is spent learning about the heartwrenching stories of her band.

Ma Rainey’s was originally a play, and I don’t generally love film adaptations of plays. Don’t get me wrong, I do love a good play on Broadway, but when it’s adapted into a film it’s all set in one room and heavy on the dialogue. I like a little more action in my movies.

Emma Diamond & Julie Kramer

I’ve been following the Comments by Celebs Instagram for a long time because I love seeing what celebs comment on other celebs accounts. And I’ve known Emma & Julie had a podcast for a while too but I never felt compelled to listen. I think I assumed they were just parlaying their IG success into a podcast because that’s what people seem to be doing these days.

But I was wrong. They give great insight into all things pop culture which is absolutely needed when there is no possible way you can consume all content.

I first decided to listen to them because I heard they were doing an in-depth Armie Hammer breakdown and that whole vile story was hard to follow. Then I listened to their Britney breakdown after I watched the Britney documentary. I love that they have a deep appreciation for celebs and understanding them as real people but also they are fans. I wasn’t going to watch the Billie Eilish documentary (because there are only so many hours in a day) but I do like her and I’m glad I got the cliff notes version of the film.

After binging 3 episodes straight, I’m now a subscriber.
