Virgin Moscow Mule with Lime and Candied Ginger

Virgin Moscow Mule Recipe

I first learned about the Moscow Mule cocktail in 2010 when Oprah went to Yosemite with Gayle. Oprah was talking about her favorite beverage and, since she didn’t have a lime squeezer, squeezed the rind with her teeth to get all the juice out. Don’t ask me why but that memory has stayed with me as long as my love for the cocktail has. I don’t know if it was the Oprah influence, but shortly after that, Moscow Mules because super trendy, so much so that you would have to give your ID to the bartender as collateral for the copper mug. I still love the light but spicy, refreshing cocktail so it’s time to give it a mocktail makeover. Enjoy this Virgin Moscow Mule recipe!

Virgin Moscow Mule Ingredients: Apple Cider, Ginger Beer, Lime, and Candied Ginger

Ingredients for a Virgin Moscow Mule

  • Apple Cider – When I’m making a virgin version of a cocktail I like to substitute organic, no sugar added apple juice or cider. The fermentation of the apples gives an alcohol, depth-like quality to the mocktail.
  • Lime Juice – It wouldn’t be a Moscow Mule without lime juice. Freshly squeezed is the best!
  • Ginger Beer – Ginger Beer is non-alcoholic but called beer since ginger is fermented with yeast. It’s more robust and spicy and less sweet than ginger ale.
  • Candied Ginger – Garnish is totally optional, but candied ginger is so good!

Non-Alcoholic Spirits

In this Virgin Moscow Mule recipe, I’ve chosen to use fermented fruit as the alcohol substitute, but the other option is to use a non-alcoholic spirit. With the emergence of the sober curious movement, many zero-proof companies have popped up. I haven’t personally tried them, but if you are interested you may want to try a vodka substitute.

What bar tools do you need to make a Non Alcoholic Moscow Mule

  • Copper Mug | Moscow Mules are traditionally served in a copper mug since copper is an excellent insulator and will help the cocktail maintain its temperature. My mugs are smooth copper, but hammered does a better insulation job, so that’s what is linked.
  • Cocktail Picks | Candied ginger is spicy, delicious, and great for nausea.
  • Jigger | An easy way to measure liquid and part of any well-stocked bar.
