This Week’s Binge 3.26.21

A new Marvel limited series started this week, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. The total series will only be six episodes, although they appear to be about an hour-long, so Disney+ launched with one, unlike WandaVision where they launched with three. One episode in and I’m entertained.

Behind Her Eyes

Netflix

Sometimes when something is so good, I want to say as little as possible about it because I just want you to experience everything for yourself. And I’m extra careful (although I always am) to not give any spoilers. This is one of those shows.

I’ve learned I love limited series because you can develop a story so much for than you can in a two hour film, but there usually a developed story arch unlike a typical TV series.

Coming off of The One, I was primed to watch another British mystery and this did not disappoint. But not only is it a mystery, it is a psychological thriller. The entire series held my attention because I wasn’t sure exactly where it was going.

I am shook. Shook. Verity levels shook.

Kenan

Peacock

With Kenan Thompson, from SNL, leading this sitcom, it is bound to be funny. He plays a widowed dad who is the host of a morning talk show in Atlanta. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but it’s a quick 20 minute scripted sitcom, that at times is laugh-out-loud funny.

The cast is great. Chriss Redd from SNL plays his brother and I can see why Lorne Michaels cast him, he’s funny. And who knew that Don Johnson, who plays Kenan’s Father-In-Law, had such great comedic timing? Even the kids are great, which child actors usually annoy me, so that’s saying a lot.

It hasn’t gotten great reviews from the critics, but who needs them anyway (says the amateur critic). If you like Kenan Thompson, I highly recommend giving it a watch!

Sound of Metal

Amazon Prime Video

Out of nowhere, well at least it wasn’t honored at the Golden Globes, came Sound of Metal with quite a few Oscar nominations. So of course I watched, in the name of my craft.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Clocking in just at two hours, I never felt like it ran long and watched the whole thing intently.

I assumed, based on the title and the images, that the film would incorporate a lot of heavy metal, of which I am not a fan. In fact it did not. Although the plot is based on a heavy metal musician losing his hearing, the story is about the journey he takes as he loses his hearing.

I can see why the Academy of Fine Arts & Sciences recognized the movie and the lead and supporting actors as best in they categories. Don’t let the heavy metal scare you, this is one of the best movies of the year.
